Pets are beloved members of the family, and their health and well-being are a top priority for pet parents. In Florida, pet owners have the option to access veterinary care and pet insurance with Dutch. In this article, we will provide answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about veterinary telemedicine and pet insurance in Florida.

What Is Veterinary Telemedicine & How Does It Work?

Veterinary telemedicine, also known as online vet care, allows pet owners to consult with a licensed veterinarian from the comfort of their own home. Through video chat or phone call, pet owners can describe their pet's symptoms, provide photos, and receive a diagnosis and customized treatment plan. This service is offered by companies such as Dutch, a pet insurance and telemedicine provider in Florida.

To access veterinary telemedicine, pet owners simply need to schedule an appointment through Dutch's website or app. During the appointment, the veterinarian will ask questions to gather more information and may request photos of the pet to aid in diagnosis. The veterinarian will then provide a diagnosis and treatment plan, which may include prescriptions that can be delivered directly to your door, thanks to our pharmacy partnerships.

Benefits & Limitations Of Veterinary Telemedicine

Veterinary telemedicine offers several benefits to pet owners, including:

  • Convenience: Pet owners can access veterinary care from the comfort of their own home, eliminating the need for travel to a veterinary clinic.
  • Cost savings: Online vet care can be more affordable than in-person visits to a veterinary clinic.
  • Increased access to care: Pet owners in rural areas or with limited transportation can access veterinary care through telemedicine.
  • Reduced stress for pets: Some pets may experience anxiety when visiting a veterinary clinic, but telemedicine allows them to receive care in a familiar environment.

However, there are also some limitations to veterinary telemedicine, such as:

  • Lack of physical exam: Veterinarians cannot perform a physical exam over video chat, which limits their ability to diagnose certain conditions.
  • Limited diagnostic testing: Some diagnostic tests require specialized equipment that may not be available during a telemedicine visit.
  • Emergencies: In cases of emergencies, online vet care may not be sufficient, and pet owners should seek immediate in-person veterinary care.

Get Online Vet Care In Florida

Veterinary telemedicine is an option for pet owners in Florida, and it is legal as long as a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) has been established. A bill introduced in 2023, SB 1600, would authorize increased access to online veterinary care in Florida.

Can an online vet write prescriptions?

Yes, online veterinarians can write prescriptions for medications and other treatments. Dutch offers this service, making it easy for pet owners to get the medications their pets need without leaving their home. However, it is important to note that a VCPR must be established before an online veterinarian can prescribe medications.

Which pets can use online vet care in Florida?

Dutch currently serves dogs and cats in Florida. Pet owners can schedule online vet appointments for their furry friends and receive a diagnosis, treatment plan, and prescription if needed. However, it is important to note that certain conditions may require in-person veterinary care, and pet owners should seek immediate care if their pet is experiencing an emergency.

Comparison of costs between traditional vet and Dutch

How much does an online vet appointment cost in Florida?

The cost of an online vet appointment in Florida can vary depending on the provider. According to Forbes, the average cost of a regular vet visit in Florida is $57.55.1 However, Dutch offers a more affordable option for pet owners with unlimited online vet care and follow-ups for as little as $11/month.

Prescriptions can be delivered to your door, and the estimated time to see a vet is 24 hours, compared to the 2 weeks it can take to see a vet at a traditional clinic.

What can I expect during an online vet appointment?

During an online vet appointment with Dutch, pet owners can expect a thorough consultation with a licensed veterinarian. The appointment typically starts with the pet owner describing their pet's symptoms and providing any requested information. The veterinarian will then work with the pet owner to understand potential causes and prescribe further treatments.

If necessary, the veterinarian may prescribe medication or recommend additional testing or in-person care. It is important to note that certain conditions may require in-person veterinary care, and pet owners should seek immediate care if their pet is experiencing an emergency.

Is veterinary telemedicine legal in Florida?

Yes, veterinary telemedicine is legal in Florida as long as a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) has been established. VCPR is defined as an ongoing relationship between a veterinarian and a pet owner in which the veterinarian has assumed responsibility for making medical judgments regarding the health of the animal and the client has agreed to follow the veterinarian's instructions. With SB 1600 potentially making it easier for pet owners to access telemedicine, Dutch's services are poised to become even more accessible and convenient for pet owners in Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Dutch?

Dutch is an online veterinary pet telehealth service, created by pet parents and board-certified veterinary specialists. We use a science-backed approach to provide pets relief for their everyday physical and behavioral health issues. Dutch connects you with licensed veterinarians over video chat and messaging to help you get care for your dog or cat quickly wherever you are — without the stress or expense of a vet visit. We also partner with pharmacies who can deliver prescription medication (in applicable states only) and over-the-counter treatments directly to your door. Dutch isn’t a veterinary practice or pharmacy, but a company that helps facilitate these services for pet parents to make veterinary care more accessible to all.

What is a visit with Dutch like?

When booking a video call with a vet, you'll be asked a few questions about your pet’s health issue. Depending on the issue, you may also be asked to fill out a longer questionnaire about their symptoms and share photographs of them so our veterinarians can better understand what’s going on. You’ll then pick an appointment time that works best for you.

During your video call, one of our licensed veterinarians will talk to you about the symptoms your pet is experiencing, ask you questions, review your pet’s medical history if you’ve provided it, and answer any questions you have. The vet will ask to see your pet and their environment. And they may ask you to perform some simple checks on them if needed.

After your video call, the vet will send you a message with a custom treatment plan to help your pet feel better, including a link to buy any recommended prescription or over-the-counter medications. Place your order and we’ll ship it free.

How much will it cost for Dutch to treat my pet?

The Dutch membership starts at $11/mo for unlimited access to the vet. No more long waits for appointments or surprise bills.

In addition to the base membership plan, our veterinarians may also recommend additional medication (Rx and/or OTC) that you will have the option of adding to your plan at an additional cost.
