Medication information

What is Clavamox?

Clavamox is a trusted, broad-spectrum antibiotic in the penicillin family. It’s been used to treat bacterial infections (including skin, gum, and urinary tract infections) in dogs and cats for over 30 years. It contains a special ingredient to neutralize ß-lactamase, an enzyme that protects bacteria from antibiotics. Once the enzyme is neutralized, the aminopenicillin antibiotic in Clavamox is able to destroy the bacteria (including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and E. coli).

What does Clavamox treat?

Conditions that Clavamox treats include:

  • Wounds

  • Pyoderma (a bacterial skin infection also known as impetigo)
  • Periodontal (gum) infections in dogs
  • Urinary tract infections in cats

What are the possible side effects of Clavamox?

The most common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include shortness of breath, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, rash or collapse. Other less serious side effects such as a yeast or fungal infection may be more likely to occur. This antibiotic should be administered twice a day and given with a meal to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. If any unwanted side effects, or changes in behavior or health, are detected, this medication should be discontinued and our veterinarians should be notified.

Do not use in pets with a history of allergic reaction to any of the penicillins or cephalosporins.

Be sure to tell your vet about any medications, vitamins, or supplements that your pet is taking.
