Trazodone is an oral tablet that increases the natural serotonin levels in the brain, helping pets stay calmer and reducing anxiety. This fast-acting medication can take effect in as little as 2 hours and stays effective for a relatively short time. This makes it an ideal medication for treating acute anxiety caused by stressful situations (such as going to the vet or flying) as well as noises (such as fireworks or thunder), phobias, and other problems that need temporary relief.

Common symptoms that trazodone treats include:

• Whining or barking
• Pacing
• Yawning
• Destructive behavior
• Panting
• Hiding
• Trying to escape

The most common adverse effect of trazodone in pets is sedation, though that’s also a desired effect. Gastrointestinal issues can also occur such as vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.
